The first print run of Songs of My Soul quickly sold out, after appearances at poetry readings and events across London. Songs of My Soul is currently available to buy here. I was inspired to also paint the cover art for book, which is an oil on canvas painting called ‘Daybreak’.
My son’s autism & ADHD diagnosis took several years with many twists and turns, and soon my collection of diary entries which sparked the story behind S.E.N.D. in the Clowns, morphed from soul-searching journey, to a wider empowering and practical guide for parents and educators.
As my first non-fiction work, the jump from poetry wasn’t by any means easy, but I endeavoured to retain a sense of emotional connection with my reader, which was deliberate.
Parenting and educating neurodiverse young people touches many deep-rooted emotions. The mental well-being of future generations depends all of us changing our thinking about people who aren’t the same as us. S.E.N.D. in the Clowns encourages awareness of our own thinking.
‘Why’ is a key question for writers, when we’re considering plots, characterisation or motives. It was my sense of curiosity that led me to train as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I deliver PoetryAsHealing workshops to carers and autistic, ADHD adults, anyone interested in emotional well-being. Creative words as therapy: it’s the sweetest of spots.
